Ending College Athletics

Earlier today (November 1st), local all African American Female Spelman College announced that it would end it's college athletics program, opting to initiate a school-wide fitness program. Although Spelman is only a Division-Three Program, a new institution like this could revolutionize the way college address the newly-anointed epidemic obesity. The school said that it found that almost fifty percent of the students at the school suffered from either high blood pressure, Type-2 Diabetes, or obesity. All three of these ailments continue to rise in not only Georgia but the entire United States of America. The new program would help all 2,100 students attending the school rather than just 80 that sports affected. As stated above, this program could revolutionize college fitness programs. With smaller Division-Three Colleges continuing to lose money with sports, it calls to question why have them at all if you can benefit all the students and not spend as much money? This will be on the mind of many small schools throughout the US. Action like this is unprecedented, as America is still trying to figure out how to properly address the obesity epidemic programs such as these and the government's "Play 60" campaign are sure to not only get elementary school kids out on the move, but full-fledged college students as well.
