India's Dengue Fever

India's Dengue Fever

With every change in season, comes new cold and disease epidemics.  Some diseases and sicknesses can devastate a community quickly.  In many countries, mosquitos are the main cause of many diseases that are wiping out the population.  One of these diseases is Dengue Fever.  Dengue Fever is a disease that began in the 1950's and it currently rising back up slowly, but steadily becoming an epidemic.  The disease comes in different forms so it can sometimes be hard to diagnose and recognize.

In India, there are 37 million people infected and out of these, 227,500 are hospitalized.  You would think that because people are getting treatment in hospitals that this epidemic could be controlled, but that's not the case at all.  Because so many people are not reporting or getting treatment from the disease, it is spreading like wildfire.  So even though these numbers seem minscule compared to the population of India, we are forgetting the cases that don't get reported.

Not only are cases not being reported, but the government is agreeing to dismiss the cases.  Telling people that they are "misdiagnosed".  These political leaders don't want to admit the issues that are easily seen.  Instead of taking action, the political leaders are passing the issue to someone else and making the problems seem like no big deal.

This is not the case at all.  Specialists are saying that everyone has had Dengue at least once before they are 20.  Everyone.  Specialists are not willing to dismiss the problem because they know that it can't just go away like the government thinks.

There is currently not an available vaccine and doctors say it might be 10 or more years until one is made that actually is effective.

Can you imagine a disease epidemic spreading throughout the United States and the government dismissing it as it is nothing? Our first instinct when we hear this is the government has poor moral judgement and that these people need treatment.  How can we treat people who aren't even diagnosed? This epidemic continues to spread and more and more people are or will be infected.
