Choice Blog - Women and War

The Johns Creek Drama Department recently put on the One Act show Women and War. It is a dramatic story depicting different wars throughout history and the ways people were involved in it. It  shows the lives of three couples in the stages of relationship - engagement, newly married, and married for years with several children. It then goes on to show the roles of women in the wars - they were very valuable, and had jobs ranging from hello girl to doughnut gal to nurse or camp follower. Each woman explains her part, and how she helped the American side - wether she had to go to France for this or not.

Usually, when you hear the word 'war', you think of men in army uniforms shooting at each other from behind trenches. Men shooting, not women shooting. How sexist is that? Although women were not able to participate in the actual fighting, they were still invaluable to the army, and the social opinion. Without nurses, the wounded soldiers would not have had anyone to take care of them. Without the hello girl's, communications would not have been able to pass from the front lines to the bases.

The cast of Women and War had the privilege of being visited by veterans from the Johns Creek Veterans Association. It was a fantastic learning experience that was thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed by all 21 of us. It was shocking to realize that what we as actors were putting on stage was an experience they had actually gone through. The entire cast was touched by their presence, and we were very thankful that they were able to see the show.
Women and War is going to the One Act Competition at West Forsyth High School this Friday, the 19th of October, where it will compete against seven other shows. The cast is lucky enough to be able to stay and watch the other shows that are being performed, and enjoy the learning experience. We hope to bring home first place and be able to move on to State!
