Week 10/15-19: Choice Posting - Power Plants and Occupy Wall Street

10/16/12 Cameron Moore

In the state of Georgia, several current issues have crossed the minds of Georgians. As I was reading the current events in Georgia, two articles were more notable from the rest of the articles. The first article was questioned the issue of the nuclear power plant that should be enstalled in Savannah, GA by 2012, titled "Up front costs for nuclear power plant approved by senate, local lawmakers weigh in." This article is intriguing and informative, and I found the article to be very interesting. The true controversy of the issue is the cost of the peoples electric bills. It is already known that installing two power plants will raise the power bill, but is the outcome wortht the cost.

Once the power plants are emplaced, the Senate will pass a bill increasing the people's electric bill by 9 percent, which would be approximatley 9 dollars. Georgia Power rebuttals that in the long run, it would save financing costs by $300 million; directly benefiting the consumer. Later on the article strengthens their argument by addressing the fact that recieve nearly 50 percent of the electricty generated, collecting money as the plant begins as to avoid compound interest.

Although this investment is very supportive of Georgia's and the National Economy, some disagree with the emplacement of the power plants. Balfur states that the bill was the most lobbied bill passed that he has seen in the past 18 years. Representative Stephens does not believe in the expansion of the power plant neither. Yet, Georgia Power has full authority if the plants will be built or not.

As some believe the building of the power plants will have negative reactions, I believe that the energy created from the power plants will satisfy the people in Georgia and the people on a national level.

The second article I read was entitled Occupy Wall Street. The was a well known protest in the
financial district of New York. This protest fought against financial greed, social inequality, and the difference between rich and poor people. As word of the protests spread, other uprisings were held in places such as Chicago, San Fransico, and Los Angelos. Occupying Wall Street was an infamous time which brought attention to the major inequalilty between the rich and poor society.

Occupy Wall Street was a well thought out protest which was meant to impact the peoples thoughts
definitely. A poster was made to further increase the effectiveness of the protest; the poster portrayed a ballerina dancing on a bull near Wall Street. Thousands of union workers marched on Wall Street while hundreds were arrested. The violence the police officers to fire non lethal weapons at the protestors.

Now, one year later from the mayhem, Wall Street is now among peace with the protestors. I believe that the violent acts of protests were necessary at the time. With an unfavorable economy and unequal social classes, the protests brought these problems to the mind of the people.
