Insidious

Sand Springs man mentally incompetent to stand trial for mother's slaying.

18 year old Alexander Cordell, in June 2009, admitted fervently to the murder of his 40 year old mother, Shani Fecht. The motive remains unknown to this day. And recently, his hearing is to be scheduled for Oct. 30 - this hearing will decide whether Cordell will be medicated or not while in Fulton County jail. His attorney is presently pleading insanity for his defense at the moment. However, there stands a question of whether or not this case will even reach trial.

As with many other cases involving mental illness, relatives are still confused to this day on why Cordell murdered his mother. Cordell identifies his actions as "psychotic" and claims he had "grown tired of his mother calling him to express concerns about his future, that she wasn't a good role model, and that she may have done some nude modeling back when he was young."

To many of us, it's difficult to comprehend such a justification to a murder. But of course, like any other psychotic event, it's difficult to really comprehend anything that's going on. Even if Cordell unveils every motive or line of reasoning he had on that day he shot his mother, we'd still be sitting here with our tails between our legs, failing to ever reach his perspective. When psychosis comes into play in society, we are all left a little unsatisfied.

There's a grand fascination with psychotic killings, and the fact that Cordell lives within a 30 mile radius from all of us makes us more relevant to his actions. It's amazing how small the world really is.

The bigger question with most cases such as Cordell's is: when is the line drawn between psychosis and plain malicious murder? In this line of reasoning, wouldn't all murderers be deemed mentally incapable? Hopefully, for Cordell, more evidence will come about to understand what level he may be on in his sanity and if that serves to support treatment or institutionalization.
