Current Event blog - Uruguay Abortion

For my current event blog, I was browsing through reddit searching for ideas. I came across one that would spark hot debate anywhere, and that was the mention of abortion. In the United States, it is a topic that is highly debated for religious and moral reasons. Uruguay has made the progressive, advancing through society move to legalize abortion, being the 2nd country in Latin America to do so. One of the more interesting things about this decision is that Uruguay is a largely Roman Catholic country, just like the United States. If the scenario was at all like the United States, abortion would be blocked because it goes against the majority religion. Uruguay made the smart decision, actually taking into account a founding principle of democracy: separation of church and the state.
This is why I find it hard to take the United States as a serious, modern, advanced country (except for California). It is a nation that is stuck on a religious background that shouldn't have any ground in politics, holding back basic human rights such as gay marriage, defeating the lives of two humans in place of one because of "pro-life" and continuing federal penalties for a drug that has long been researched in labs to have no harmful effects humans (but very beneficial effects to police forces and for-profit prisons). If the United States is truly a modern and advanced country, abortion should not even be an issue that is debate in Congress, because it is essentially a waste of time of our politicians. Sadly, the majority of the population is stuck in an era of the past, and wishes to remain in that state forever
