Modern Halloween
Halloween. Why do we love it? We're teenagers and
we can no longer trick-or-treat, but yet there is something about this special
holiday that draws in every crowd no matter what age. Halloween originated from
the Celtic Festival of Samhain. People used dress up in costumes to ward off
ghosts. This occasion later evolved for children to dress up as their favorite
superhero, princess, or other costumes and “trick-or-treat” or roam from house
to house to obtain candy or other sweet treats. There is something about the
shorter days and cold, brisk weather that draws in all crowds into the spirit
of this traditional holiday.
One thing that I have realized is that teenagers,
although can no longer “trick-or-treat” are just as much a part of the spirit
of Halloween. Scary movies have become a large tradition of the Halloween
season. Horror films specifically choose release dates around Halloween. This
year the movies “Sinister”, “The Possession”, “House at the End of the Street”,
and “Paranormal Activity 4” have all come out around the time of Halloween.
This sets the mood for the holiday and allows teenagers to still be a part of
it. The constant seek for excitement and adrenaline of teenagers allow them to
be the perfect target for scary movies usually rated PG-13 and R.
Adults and teenagers both also attribute Halloween
with the parties occurring around this time. Colleges especially thrive under
this certain ritual. This allows for everyone to participate in the ritual of dressing
up in different costumes, but for this certain situation is to go out and just
have fun.
Another thing this holiday brings is the increase
in media and product sales. Costumes, decorations, lights, and movies all add
to the sales that stores and movies theaters make during October. Just like
Christmas, consumers go crazy for Halloween. Whether it is buying costumes and
candy for children, purchasing movies tickets with your friends, or getting
decorations for a party, all of these aspects add up to increase consumer sales
during this time of the year. Some businesses rely on the necessities of
Halloween to make a profit and we consumers, feel the need to join in the
festivities. In conclusion, this festive holiday appeals to everyone and has
become my favorite holiday.
Easily - my favorite holiday.
