For my current event post, I found a Lexis Nexis news article that discusses the announcement of a future port deepening project to occur at the Panama Canal. The article also goes in detail towards how the port of Savannah will have to undergo nearby deepening projects as well to accommodate this new wave of wider ships willing to engage in international commerce with the United States. According to this article, the majority of south eastern imports around the Texas and Tennessee area come in through this port as well as the Hartsfield-Jackson International airport in Atlanta.
The state of Georgia will have to act quickly to accommodate the needs of new waves of commerce wanting to enter this port. The Deepening project will start and finish in the year of 2014. So, the state government is trying to hire as many workers specialized in the area of construction to ensure that the project gets completed in time and the new waves of wider ships will be able to unload all supplies efficiently and safely into Savannah to be transported to the remainder of the Southeastern United States.
As a result of these new deepening projects occurring in Savannah, a whole new array of commerce from technology to agricultural imports will be available to both the state of Georgia and to the national economy. The deepening projects have already been funded in the areas such as Norfolk, Virginia and California ports and are on their way to employ new construction workers as well.
