Black Cats and Halloween

Recently, I learned that that animal shelters do not give out black cats for donation at many animal shelters because of the risk of abuse and/or death by those who adopt. Horrible things are done to these cats including "ritual torture and killing," said a cat foundation's owner. I think it is really great that organizations are starting to use their common sense to screen these people who adopt. There are societies in opposition however, stating that these cats need care as soon as possible and restricting a whole month is an entire month less for the cat.
While it is a great cause these organizations are fighting for, I am slightly upset by the fact that this has to be done. Why is our society so backwards, to the point where mythical sayings and ideas such as "luck" with zero scientific backing still affect society. I think this is just another indicator as to how far behind some of the American public is and why this country is forever set in a battle between the educated and progressive versus the uneducated and conservative.
