Current Event 2: Fatal Church Shooting In South Fulton

As I was searching for a current event to "blog" about, I noticed that there was one local event that was causing quite a stir on various sites including Fox 5, ajc.com, and 11Alive.  In fact, it was on the front page of every site.  But now that I'm looking at it again, I see that this event actually took place this morning, at 10:30am to be more specific, which probably explains why it's everywhere...

But now, I guess I should really just get to the point.

Early this morning at World Changers Church International, located nearby in South Fulton County, Gregory McDowell was shot as he was leading prayer.  A former maintenence man from the church, Floyd Palmer, calmly walked in and opened fire as the rest of the congregation watched in horror.  McDowell later died of his wounds.  It is still unclear as to whether McDowell was an intended target or just in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Luckily, Palmer was found around 4:00 this afternoon outside of Macy's department store in Lenox Square, near Buckhead.  He was taken into custody, where he is currently being held.

The fact that this fatal shooting occured in a church is what really stood out to me.  Churches are meant to be a place of worship, somewhere safe, isolated from the chaos of the outside world.  However, it is becoming more and more clear that shootings can happen anyplace, anytime-- whether it be at a university, the movies, or in this case, at a church.

Life is too often taken for granted in today's society.  This tragedy illustrates the fact it can be ripped away suddenly and without warning.  As a result, we need to live each and every day to the fullest.  It's hard, especially when we're constantly being forced to focus on school.  However, I challenge you to try. You never know which day could be your last.
